What is LP50

It's 2020 and product transparency is the dominant shift in the manufacturing world as we continue to pursue global health and sustainability. Looking to learn more about Living Product 50 (LP50), Toxnot, and how we’re catalyzing product transparency? Stick around for everything you need to know to get started.

LP50 is an unprecedented collaboration of leading manufacturers that are working to promote healthy and high-performing building materials. LP50 is largely driven by these participating companies but is hosted by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). The unique opportunity presented here is the common voice that can be leveraged when a large group of industry leaders come together, demanding change and product transparency.

With that said, what are the tangible goals of LP50? As outlined by ILFI, they are as follows:

  • To leverage a common voice of sustainability to communicate more effectively with stakeholders in the green building industry
  • To support the green building movement through product transparency
  • To collectively develop sustainability initiatives and report progress back to stakeholders
  • To challenge customers and suppliers to better integrate sustainability

We can narrow it down to this -

"The LP50 is a collaboration of leading manufacturers working to ensure that full ingredient transparency is the rule, not the exception."

Toxnot can help you, as one of these leading manufacturers, in making this a reality. If you are not currently a participant in the LP50, but you would like to be, reach out to LP50@living-future.org with your inquiry.

How Toxnot Can Help

Toxnot is a trusted partner of the ILFI, and we are committed to helping you reach the goals set out by the LP50. Toxnot is a software platform that helps manufacturers and suppliers discover and/or store chemical data, document sustainability and compliance information, screen against hazardous chemical lists, and ultimately disclose that information through shared materials and sustainability reports. With respect to LP50, Toxnot can be used to perform supplier outreach and data gathering, while simultaneously providing an avenue for suppliers to streamline the sharing of their frequently asked for product data.

With a Free Toxnot account, you have access to an LP50 supplier survey template that includes the LP50 letter. This means you can use Toxnot to reach out to your full supplier list with just a few clicks of a button. Your suppliers can then respond to you data requests directly through the Toxnot platform, even keeping data private through the proprietary functionality. This data can in turn be pulled directly into your bill of materials (BOM) and can be used for a list of other sustainability and compliance reporting.

The real benefit for suppliers lies in Toxnot Shared Materials. This is a database hosted on the Toxnot platform that allows manufacturers to pull in their supplier's product data without needing to ask for the data over and over again. This can significantly cut down on the time that suppliers need to spend disclosing and responding to customer requests, as well as communicating product updates.  If suppliers aren't quite ready to share their data publicly, they can even use Toxnot Shared Materials to share with a specified list of customers that they determine.

And no worries, we've got your data protected. There's a built-in NDA in Toxnot's Terms and Conditions so you can feel confident that your data is safe and private until you decide to share it with customers.

What Are my Next Steps?

Interested in using Toxnot to help you with LP50 outreach, or would like to learn more about how we can help you as a supplier?

First things first, set up a meeting with us here. We will walk you through the process and schedule a couple of meetings to help you complete your supplier outreach. This is all free.

To prepare for your supplier outreach, you will need to collect:

  • A list of your supplier contacts
  • A list of your materials that you will be surveying about. These are the materials that you purchase from your supplier. In the outreach you will be asking for more information about the substance data as part of this collective push for product transparency. Here is a template spreadsheet that can be used to organize this material data. You may not have any of the chemical data right now, and that's okay!

It's as simple as that. Just these steps will set you up for success while using Toxnot. It's a new decade of product transparency and we're here to help along the way!

If you have any other questions about LP50, Toxnot, or the supplier outreach process, shoot us a message. You can chat us directly using the chat box in the bottom right-hand side of your screen or you can email us.
